The success of a root canal procedure is often defined by the final obturation, but the quality of the fill is entirely dependent on the preparation that precedes it. Furthermore, in techniques like warm vertical condensation, the precise shaping allows the heat to be transferred more efficiently to the gutta percha, optimizing its flow and ensuring the dense, three-dimensional seal that is the hallmark of modern endodontics. The use of specialized, matched obturation points—gutta percha cones designed with the same taper as the final shaping file—has become common practice since the early 2010s.
